Pakistan: Heavy monsoon rains forecast in coming days

Pakistan’s Meteorological Department forecasts heavy monsoon rains across the country July 9 through July 13

Warning

Event

The Pakistani Meteorological Department is forecasting heavy monsoon rains across the country in the coming days. Rains are expected to start on Sunday, July 9, in Punjab, Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Sindh, and Balochistan and last through Monday, July 10. Officials warned that there is a risk of landslides, particularly in Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and the upper areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Between Tuesday, July 11, and Thursday, July 13, there is an elevated risk of flooding in the low-lying areas of the country. Road traffic and transportation disruptions may occur due to flooding or landslides.

Context

The summer rainy season, or southwest monsoon period, lasts from June through September. Flooding is a common occurrence during this period, often affecting thousands and resulting in a significant number of fatalities.

Advice

Individuals are advised to monitor the situation and to adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
