Peru: Various strikes complicate life in Cusco region /update 1

Event

A 48-hour general strike to protest the building of an airport in Chinchero was launched in the Cusco region on Wednesday, July 12. This is in addition to a long-running teacher strike in the region, launched in mid-June, which seems to be intensifying. No public transit or Perú Rail services are expected through July 13, including the rail line linking the regional capital - the city of Cusco - to the popular tourist destination Machu Picchu. Widespread store and business closures have also been reported amid the general strike. Furthermore, striking workers have erected numerous and highly disruptive roadblocks in the region over the past few days, including within the city of Cusco.

Context

Protests and strikes are relatively common in the country. While most demonstrations remain peaceful, violence can break out with little to no warning. Major protest activity can cause significant disruptions to daily life, including in areas popular with tourists.
