Berguitta cyclone to bring hazardous sea and weather conditions starting from January 17; travel disruptions likely

A “pre-cyclone” alert has been issued for Tropical Storm Berguitta, expected to hit Réunion January 17-18. Hazardous sea and weather conditions are anticipated in the east, southeast, and southwest of the island, including winds up to 200 km/h (125 mph), sea swells up to 7 m (22 ft), and heavy rainfall. As of Tuesday, January 16, gusts of up to 90 km/h (55 mph) have been reported on the western coast of the island, from Saint Joseph to La Pointe des Aigrettes (Saint-Paul), as well as on the eastern coast from Sainte-Rose to Sainte-Marie.

Tropical Storm Berguitta is a Category 1 storm on Saffir-Simpson scale and is expected to intensify into a Category 3 storm before making landfall, indicating the possibility of highly dangerous winds and potentially extensive damage. Associated transportation disruptions are likely.

Context

The island experiences an annual cyclone season from November through April, during which time tropical storms and torrential rain can result in significant material damage.

Advice

All those present in Réunion are advised to monitor the situation and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities. Be prepared to leave immediately if an evacuation order is given; otherwise, remain indoors until authorities have indicated that the storm has passed. Distance yourself from natural bodies of water and be aware that hotels and airports may close in the event of a storm alert.
