India: Militants kill at least four police officers in Shopian (Kashmir) Aug. 29 /update 2

Event

Suspected militants launched an attack on a police convoy in Arhama village (Shopian district, Kashmir) on Wednesday, August 29, killing four police officers. Security forces cordoned off the area following the incident, which took place after two Hizbul Mujahideen militants were reportedly killed in Anantnag district (Kashmir) earlier the same day. Internet services were temporarily suspended in the area of the security operation in Anantnag. Additional militant attacks on security forces are possible in Kashmir in the near-term.

Context

Insurgents (locals or Pakistani nationals) have been fighting Indian rule in Jammu and Kashmir since 1989. Some 70,000 people have died and many more have been injured in related violence, uprisings, and military crackdowns.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
