Libya: Militia clashes leave 27 dead in Tripoli area as of August 30 /update 1

Event

Clashes have been reported between opposing militia groups in the Tripoli area in recent days which have left at least 27 people dead and some 100 others wounded as of Thursday, August 30. The fighting reportedly erupted on Monday, August 27, and has prompted the evacuations of citizens from conflict areas; the clashes had mostly ceased on Thursday following the announcement of a new ceasefire deal between the warring sides on the night of Wednesday, August 29 (local time).

Despite the ceasefire, further instances of gunfire and explosions have been reported in the Khallet Al-Furjan and Al-Habda neighborhoods of Tripoli as of Thursday afternoon; additional clashes between rival militia groups are possible in the Tripoli area in the coming hours and days. Consequent transportation disruptions are possible on thoroughfares in Tripoli and at Mitiga International Airport (MJI).

Context

Libya has been divided into rival governments and factions with their own militias and political parties since the 2011 uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi. The security situation in Libya remains precarious and there is little to no sign of a return of relative stability in the near-term.
