Malaysia: Celebrations of the 61st National Day (Aug.31)

On August 31, Malaysia celebrated its 61st year of independence from British colonial rule. A large colourful parade was held in Putrajaya, the administrative capital, the first since 2005. Around 300,000 people attended the event. Parades and celebrations were also staged in other parts of the country.

On a separate note, as a reminder for foreign nationals visiting this South-eastern Asian country, Malaysian police have sometimes in the past used tear gas and water cannons to control public protests. As a precaution, avoid all demonstrations. Under Malaysian law it's illegal for foreign citizens to participate in demonstrations and rallies. Potential road restrictions and transportation incidents in Putrajaya are possible throughout the day.
