Cholera outbreak reported in Kano state; at least 11 associated deaths reported as of August 6

Nigerian health officials have reported an outbreak of cholera in Kano State, for which 47 people are currently receiving medical treatment and which has been responsible for at least 11 associated deaths as of Monday, August 6. Among the most affected villages are Hayin Madaci, Falli Sarki, and Kuki in the Bebeji area of Kano State. The further spread of the outbreak is possible in the coming weeks.
Context
Cholera is typically spread via infected water supplies and induces acute diarrhea leading to severe dehydration, frequently resulting in death. The risk of death is greatest among people with compromised immune systems, such as malnourished children or those living with HIV. However, even among healthy adults, cholera can be fatal within a matter of hours.
