US: California fire burns near recently contained Carr Fire August 30 /update 6

Event

The so-called Hirz Fire, located around 29 km (18 mi) north of Redding (California), continues to burn as of Thursday, August 30. The fire, which was started from unknown human causes on August 9, has burned 14,073 hectares (34,776 acres) in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest and is 39 percent contained as of 19:00 (local time) on Thursday. The Shasta Lake Ranger District has been closed until December 31. This fire is located across Interstate-5 from the Carr Fire, which burned 92,670 hectares (229,000 acres) and killed seven people. Firefighters successfully completed full containment of the Carr Fire around 19:00 on Thursday. Fire patrols will continue for several more days in the area.

Context

The Carr Fire was started on July 23 by a malfunctioning vehicle. It is the largest in Shasta county history and the eighth most destructive fire in California history. Wildfires are common in California from May to November.
