US: Hurricane Hector to pass south of Hawaii August 8-9 /update 2
Hurricane Hector expected to pass south of Hawaiian archipelago August 8-9; tropical storm watch in effect for Big Island

According to the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Hector was located approximately 940 km (585 mi) east-southeast of Hilo as of 02:00 (local time) on Tuesday, August 7. Hector is expected to pass south of the Hawaiian archipelago August 8-9 as a major hurricane without making landfall. A tropical watch is currently in effect for coastal areas of Big Island (a.k.a. island of Hawai’i); at its closest, Hector is forecast to be approximately 265 km (165 mi) south of the island on Wednesday.
Strong winds are expected across the archipelago beginning late on Tuesday. Related transportation disruptions and power outages cannot be ruled out.
