US: Mendocino Complex Fires (California) continues to spread August 6 /update 2

The so-called Mendocino Complex Fires (northern California) continue to grow on August 6 despite ongoing containment efforts

Warning

Event

The so-called Mendocino Complex Fires (Mendocino, Lake, and Colusa counties) continue to grow as of Monday, August 6, with firefighters struggling to contain the Ranch Fire in particular. Overall, the entire complex has burned a total of 110,747 hectares (273,664 acres) and is 30 percent contained, making it the second largest in California history; the Ranch Fire is 91,054 hectares (225,001 acres) and at 21 percent containment and the River Fire is at 19,694 hectares (48,664 acres) and 58 percent containment. The Ranch Fire continues to spread to the north and southeast, threatening communities and forcing additional mandatory evacuations of most of northern Lake County, the Cow Mountain area, and areas west of the East Park Reservoir. Progress is being made against the smaller River Fire, which will allow resources to be re-allocated to the larger, northern fire. Fire authorities estimate full containment of the entire complex by Wednesday, August 15. Up-to-date information can be found on the CalFire website or its Twitter account.

Context

The River and Ranch fires both started on Friday, July 27. Wildfires are common in California from May through November. A Red Flag Warning means a combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and high temperatures create ideal fire weather conditions.

Advice

Individuals in affected areas are advised to exercise caution when traveling in areas near the wildfire, adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. road closures, evacuation orders), and monitor the situation. Children and those with respiratory illnesses are advised to limit outdoor activity.
