Teachers' union announces sit-in protests in Conakry on November 19 and 22; heightened security presence anticipated

Warning

Event

The teachers' union Syndicat libre des enseignants et chercheurs de Guinée (SLECG) has called on its members, including teachers, researchers, and administrators, to participate in a series of protests on Monday, November 19, and Thursday, November 22. A sit-in protest will reportedly take place at the Ministry of Education building in Kaloum prefecture (Conakry region) on Monday and Thursday, while additional related protests may also take place nationwide. A heightened security presence can be expected. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.

Context

The SLECG union has been on strike since October due to a longstanding salary dispute. Protests held by teachers as recently as November 12 resulted in violence when security forces attempted to disperse the crowds.

Advice

Individuals in Conakry are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all demonstrations and protests due to the risk of violence, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
