Uganda: Violent anti-Asian protest in Lira Nov. 17; more likely

Violent protests erupted in the town of Lira (Northern region) on Saturday, November 17. Security forces used tear gas and live ammunition to disperse protesters, who attacked Indian nationals and Asian businesses following the death of a child allegedly killed by two Asians on November 9. Five people were injured in the clashes. Asians present in the area have reportedly been evacuated and additional security forces have been deployed. A local radio station accused of fomenting racial violence has been shut down until further notice. Further such violent protests are likely in the coming days and weeks.
