Emergency response underway as of May 10 following tornado damage in Bunbury, WA, Australia. Damage and casualties reported.

Warning

Emergency response operations are ongoing as of May 10 after a tornado struck parts of the town of Bunbury in southwestern Western Australia. The tornado touched down in the South Bunbury area around 16:00 May 10 and has caused damage to several buildings across parts of Banbury, including in the Withers and College Grove areas. The tornado caused severe damage to the Bunbury Police and Citizens Youth Club. One person from the youth club and another from a nearby prison have been taken to hospital. The storm also downed power lines in the area, leading to around 3,300 homes being without power in Bunbury, South Bunbury, Dalyellup, Withers, Carey Park, and Usher. In the affected areas, disruptions to ground travel, business operations, and electricity are likely, at least over the coming days.

Further adverse weather is possible in the region over the coming hours. As of early evening May 10, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for damaging, locally destructive winds and heavy rainfall across parts of Lower West, South West, and Great Southern forecast districts; Bunbury lies just outside the current warning area, but could still be impacted by the adverse weather. Further tornadoes in the region cannot be ruled out during the ongoing severe weather.

Monitor local media for updated emergency and weather information. Be prepared to quickly move to a safe location if new warnings are issued. Postpone driving until weather conditions improve. Charge battery-powered devices in case prolonged electricity outages occur. Strictly heed the instructions of local authorities.
