Protesters engage in vandalism and clash with police in Paris, France, May 1, injuring at least seven officers; heightened security likely.

Warning

Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security presence near Place de la Nation in Paris over the coming hours after demonstrators commemorating International Workers' Day clashed with law enforcement officers in the city May 1. The clashes reportedly occurred as thousands of activists marched from Place de la Republique to Place de la Nation via Boulevard Beaumarchais and Place de la Bastille. Some demonstrators vandalized shop windows, vehicles, trash cans, and bus shelters as well as threw stones and other objects at police, including an improvised explosive device that injured seven officers. Police, for their part, fired tear gas at demonstrators and arrested more than two dozen people.

Transport disruptions will likely affect the vicinity of Place de la Nation through at least late May 1. Further clashes between activists and police cannot be ruled out. Law enforcement officers may use tear gas to disperse unruly protesters.

Avoid Place de la Nation until demonstrators and police vacate the area. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the affected area and any disruptions. Strictly heed all instructions issued by law enforcement officers.
