Italy: Unionized educators to strike nationwide May 24

Unionized educators to launch 24-hour strike across Italy May 24. Business disruptions and associated picket protest possible.

Informational

Unionized educators affiliated with Confederazione Sindacale Lavoratori Europei (CSLE) and Sindacato Autonomo Europeo Scuola ed Ecologia (SAESE) unions plan to strike nationwide on May 24. The purpose of the labor action is to demand improved working conditions and to raise awareness about healthy diets.

Picket protests are possible nationwide; possible protest locations include schools, government education offices, and public squares. Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near any demonstrations that materialize. The strike action could also result in some employee absenteeism.

Plan accordingly for increased absenteeism among employees who are parents or guardians of school-aged children on May 24; consider a liberal leave or telecommuting policy, where possible. Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near protest sites. Strictly heed all instructions from authorities. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
