Europe: Workers' organizations plan demonstrations in multiple cities May 1 to mark Labor Day

Unionized workers and activist organizations plan demonstrations across Europe, May 1, to mark Labor Day. Anticipate localized disruptions.

Warning

Event

Unionized workers and activist groups plan to demonstrate in multiple cities to mark Labor Day, May 1. Protests will likely take place in most European capital cities, and other urban centers. Attendance is likely to be higher than in previous years, due to the ongoing widespread civil unrest in multiple countries linked to cost-of-living, pay, and climate-related protests. The largest events are likely to include:

  • Berlin, Germany: Attendees will gather from 17:00 at Kundgebung, and then march at 18:00 to Orienenplatz.

  • London, UK: Labor unions will lead a march from Clerkenwell Green at 12:00 to Trafalgar Square.

  • Paris, France: Multiple labor unions will continue protesting against the government's pension reforms. Activists will march from Place de la Republique at 14:30 to Place de la Nation. Organizers predict between 80,000-100,000 people will participate.

Other protest events may take place throughout the weekend April 29-30. Possible gathering sites will include town centers, cultural sites, and other popular rally locations.

Authorities will likely enact increased security measures, including deploying additional personnel, at any gathering site. Localized transport and business disruptions may occur, particularly if there is a high turnout or protesters occupy nearby streets. Clashes are possible if police forcibly disperse demonstrators or activists attempt to breach any security barriers.

Advice

Avoid demonstrations as a precaution. Seek updated information on protest plans and related disruptions. Exercise caution if operating near known and possible rally sites. Plan for possible transport and business disruptions near gatherings and seek alternative routes to circumvent affected areas. If any violence erupts nearby, immediately leave the area. Heed local traffic and security advice.
