Road closures, disruptions ongoing on Highway 55 south of Springfield, Ill., US, as of late May 1 due to dust storms. Disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Authorities have closed Highway I-55 between mile markers 63 and 80 south of Springfield, Illinois, due to reduced visibility from wind-blown dust from recently plowed fields as of late May 1. The poor visibility has caused at least 70 vehicles to crash, with at least six people killed and 30 injured. Reports indicate the road will likely remain closed into May 2. Poor visibility is likely also affecting other roads in the area. Current weather forecasts do not indicate further dust storms, but localized reduction of visibility due to dust-blown wind is possible.

Transit disruptions are likely in southern Illinois into May 2; disruptions to business activity reliant on truck shipments are also likely. Closures of additional roads or extensions of road closures are possible. Reduced air quality in the affected area is likely.

Advice

Avoid unnecessary travel in the affected area until roads are reopened and visibility is restored. Monitor local news and weather sources for developments. Strictly heed the directives of authorities. Plan for transit and business disruptions through May 2. Consider remaining indoors if dust is heavy, especially if you suffer from a respiratory illness, such as asthma, or conditions that lead to increased risk from dust exposure. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
