Egypt: Violent clashes in Al-Warraq July 16

Event

Violent clashes broke out between security forces and residents of Al-Warraq Island in Greater Cairo on Sunday, July 16, leaving one dead and 50 wounded, including 31 police officers. The fighting started after security forces arrived on the island to demolish buildings the government claims were illegally constructed. Police arrested ten people on charges of attacking security force members.  Security roadblocks have been erected on bridges leading to the island.  According to media reports, some residents believe that the campaign to demolish buildings is part of a plan to clear the whole island. Further clashes are possible in the coming weeks. 

Context

Tensions between residents of Al-Warraq Island and Egyptian security forces have been strained after the Interior Ministry vowed to crack down on illegal construction on the banks of the Nile in 2014. Clashes were reported in July 2016 after Egyptian authorities evacuated buildings on the island to construct the Rod Al-Farag axis road.
