Mauritania: Northeast designated closed military zone July 14

The government of Mauritania has designated the northeastern border area with Algeria and Mali as a military zone prohibited to civilians. Officials cited security threats by traffickers as the impetus for the move and warned that anyone circulating in the area will be considered a military target. The restricted area includes Cheggat, Ain Ben Tili, Dhar Tichitt, and Lemreyya.

Context

Kidnapping and other violent acts committed both by the terrorist organizations, al-Qa'ida In the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and the Macina Liberation Front, as well as criminal organizations have occurred on several occasions in border regions. The terrorist groups the Islamic State (IS), AQIM, and Al-Mourabitoun have all declared their intention to attack foreigners in West Africa over the coming year.
