Montenegro: Forest fires across country /update 1

Forest fires continue to affect Montenegro; situation reportedly under control

Informational

Event

As of Monday, July 24, major wildfires that continue to burn across Montenegro are reportedly under control. The fires have affected much of the country, notably in Markovina, Besa, and Prijevor.

Continued high temperatures are forecast throughout the country, including areas affected by forest fires, heightening the risk of fire outbreaks.

Context

On July 18, another massive wildfire erupted in the Lustica peninsula, located in the west of Montenegro, and subsequently spread to neighboring Croatia. Despite international help, firefighters struggled to extinguish the flames threatening residences and camping zones.

Since June, southern Europe has been affected by a wave of wildfires due to strong winds, dry conditions, and severe temperatures.

Advice

Individuals are advised to exercise caution when traveling to areas affected by the wildfires, to adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders), and to keep abreast of the situation.
