New Zealand: Strong storm hits New Zealand July 13

Massive winter storm moves through New Zealand on July 13; traffic delays expected

Warning

Event

Heavy snow, rain, and wind have hit New Zealand on Thursday, July 13, causing traffic chaos, power shortages, and flooding as the fierce storm, carrying gales of up to 160 km/h (100 mph), moved through the country.

Over 10,000 homes were hit by power outages in the North Island; thousands of which are still without power, as of July 13, on one of the coldest nights of the year. Technicians are currently working to restore outages from Martinborough to Thames.

Meanwhile, roads have been shut down and air traffic seriously disrupted, with many flights delayed or cancelled at Wellington International Airport (WLG) and Auckland Airport (AKL). Air New Zealand canceled all of its domestic flight on July 13 until 12:30 pm (local time).

Weather conditions are expected to progressively return to normal by Friday, July 14. Air traffic should resume although some flights may be affected by unstable weather conditions in east and central parts of the Northern Island and around Wellington.

Context

This is the second time this year New Zealand has faced severe weather after a cyclone hit in April, causing schools to be closed down and coastal areas to be evacuated.

Advice

Individuals in affected areas are advised to keep abreast of weather forecasts and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities.
Travelers are advised to check the status of their flights as well as allow for extra time to reach their destination.
