Peru: Landslides block roads in Arequipa region

Landslides provoked by July 17 earthquake continue to block roads in Arequipa region, including the Pan American Highway

Landslides provoked by an earthquake that struck late on Monday, July 17, have blocked the Pan American Highway (Panamericana Sur). The landslides occurred on the stretch of the highway linking the capital Lima with the Arequipa region. As of late Tuesday, traffic remained blocked. Landslides were also reported on the Atico-Caravelí (R104), Chicha-Yanque, Capiza-Castilla, and Iquipi-Urasqui routes.

It is unclear when the roads will be cleared.

Peru lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where earthquakes, as well as volcanic activity, are relatively frequent.
