Guinea: Government shuts down radio station Nov. 27 /update 2

Event

Government officials shut down the BTA FM radio station in Labé, Fouta Djallon region, on Monday, November 28, in order to prevent the broadcast of an interview with a teachers' union leader. President Alpha Condé warned that any station that subsequently engages with the unions will also be taken off air.

Furthermore, student protests occurred across the capital city of Conakry and Boké, Boké region, on Monday, causing traffic disruptions and clashes with security personnel. Demonstrators reportedly burned tires in the streets and threw stones at the Minister of National Education's residence. Context

Teachers are continuing their nationwide, indefinite strike despite calls from the government and other unions to lift it. The strike began on November 13, with teachers demanding the complete implementation of a wage increase agreement made between the government and union representatives in September 2016. However, the strike is not supported by all members of the Free Union of Teachers and Researchers of Guinea (SLECG). Since November 13, small sporadic protests by students have occurred in Conakry, demanding that the teachers return to work.
