Indonesia: Tropical Storm Cempaka kills 19 on Java Nov. 27-29
At least 19 killed by Tropical Storm Cempaka on the island of Java November 27-29; further rain forecast through November 30

As of Wednesday, November 29, at least 19 people have been killed by Tropical Storm Cempaka, which hit the southern coast of Indonesia’s main island of Java beginning on Monday. The storm triggered heavy rains – as well as subsequent landslides and floods - and tornadoes. Overflowing rivers reportedly flooded thousands of houses.
The storm is forecast to move away from Java on Thursday.
Context
Cempaka marked the official start of the Indian Ocean cyclone season. A second cyclone may be developing in the southern part of Sumatra Island.
Tropical cyclones and typhoons are common during the rainy season, which spans from December to March.

Individuals present in Indonesia are advised to follow all instructions as issued by local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock an adult over.
