Traffic disruptions will likely affect parts of Gaston and Cleveland counties, North Carolina, over the short term after a traffic accident on Interstate 85 (I-85) prompted authorities to close part of the route April 14. The crash reportedly occurred in Gaston County between Kings Mountain, Cleveland County, and Gastonia, Gaston County, and officials have accordingly closed southbound lanes of I-85 near Exit 10 (US-29); the lanes are slated to remain closed until around 18:10. A fire has engulfed a tractor-trailer involved in the crash, and the blaze has emitted thick, black smoke. Officials did not immediately report any casualties in connection with the incident; however, reports of casualties may soon emerge.

Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security presence at the scene of the crash at least until the affected stretch of highway reopens to traffic.

Avoid the affected stretch of I-85 until authorities reopen it to traffic and vacate the scene of the crash. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the vicinity of the accident and related disruptions. Allow extra time for travel in Gaston and Cleveland counties.
