France: Human rights activists to demonstrate in several cities nationwide April 29
Activist groups to demonstrate in multiple cities across France April 29. Localized transport disruptions likely.
Event
Several activist organizations, including United Against Disposable Immigration (Unies contre l'immigration jetable, UCIJ), plan to protest in multiple cities across France on April 29. The purpose of the action is to denounce several acts by the government, including a major immigration bill supported by Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin and a controversial operation to remove undocumented migrants from Mayotte. Organizers have announced the following times and locations.
Grenoble: 14:00-18:00 at avenue Marcelin Berthelot (Tram Malherbe).
Le Havre: 15:00-18:00 at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI).
Marseille: 14:00-17:00 at Port d'Aix
Nimes: 10:30-13:00 at Esplanade Palais de Justice.
Paris: 14:00-19:00 at Place de la Republique.
Poitiers: 11:00-14:30 at Place du Marche
Rennes: 14:00-18:00 at Place de la Republique
Saint-Brevin-Les-Pins: 11:00-17:00 at Place du Marche
Strasbourg: 15:00-18:00 at the Place Kleber
Toulouse: 15:00-18:00 at Place Arnaud Bernard.
Additional demonstrations will also take place in other cities, including Lille, Montpellier, La Rochelle, Saint-Etienne, and Rouen; however, details have not been released as of yet.
Police will likely deploy to monitor and facilitate the demonstrations. Heightened security and associated road closures will probably cause localized traffic disruptions. Although the gatherings will likely remain largely peaceful, isolated confrontations with police cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Check public transport schedules and local traffic conditions for disruptions before beginning journeys; allow extra time to reach destinations if traveling in the impacted areas.
