Kenya: Opposition coalition plans to rally in Nairobi April 28 and May 2

Opposition coalition to rally in Nairobi on April 28 and May 2. Transport and business disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Kenyan political opposition party the Azimio la Umajo-One Kenya Coalition plans to stage two rallies in Nairobi over the coming days. The first gathering will take place on April 28; participants will assemble at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) to greet party leader Raida Odinga upon his return from a trip to Dubai before proceeding to the Kamukunji Grounds in the city's Kibra constituency where a rally will take place. Organizers have as yet made no announcement as to what time Odinga is scheduled to arrive.

The second demonstration will take place on May 2 and consist of a march through Nairobi's central business district. The march route will follow Moi, Kenyatta, Haile Selassie, and Harambee avenues; no start time has as yet been announced.

Authorities have banned all protests by the Azmio coalition citing security concerns. Hence, security personnel will almost certainly deploy to affected areas of Nairobi and could attempt to disperse the gatherings. Clashes between demonstrators and police, as well as rival groups of activists, cannot be ruled out. Transport and business disruptions are likely in areas near the gatherings.

Advice

Avoid all protests and large gatherings as a standard security precaution. Heed the instructions of local authorities. Allow extra time to reach destinations near locations where demonstration activity is taking place. If violence occurs nearby, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building.
