Pakistan: Rallies likely nationwide on May 1 to mark International Workers' Day

Various political parties and activist group will likely stage rallies, marches, and other gatherings across Pakistan on May 1 to commemorate International Workers' Day. In Lahore, the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) party will march from Liberty Chowk to Nasir Bagh Park starting at 13:00; PTI leader and former prime minister Imran Khan will address the rally. The PTI will also hold additional gatherings at undisclosed locations in Islamabad and Peshawar at 13:00. In Karachi, laborers will reportedly hold a march from Regal Chowk in the Saddar area to the Karachi Press Club.

Other International Workers' Day events will probably take place in many other locations nationwide, especially near prominent government buildings, public squares, press clubs, sports grounds, and thoroughfares. Participation will vary by locale and sponsoring group, although the largest turnout could occur at PTI-related gatherings, which have previously attracted thousands of participants.

Authorities will almost certainly monitor any such gatherings and may disperse overly disruptive crowds. Clashes between police and activists cannot be ruled out. Demonstrators may march along or block roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions.
