South Africa: Unionized truckers plan to stage nationwide strike April 30

Unionized truckers plan to strike across South Africa April 30. Possible travel disruptions may affect several cities.

Warning

Event

Unionized truckers represented by All Truck Drivers Forum and Allied (ATDF) South Africa plan to stage a nationwide strike on April 30. Organizers did not announce any plans to protest, but strike participants may stage protests, possibly blocking highways and roads to entry and exit points in several cities and other urban centers. The purpose of the action includes denouncing the employment of foreign nationals instead of local drivers in the industry and demanding higher wages, among several issues.

The work stoppage and protests may cause significant disruptions to transport and ground freight shipping. Strike-related protests can disrupt major thoroughfares throughout the country. Increased security, road congestion, and localized transport and business disruptions are likely around demonstrations if they occur. Skirmishes between protesters and security officials cannot be ruled out, especially if officials attempt to disperse crowds or remove roadblocks.

Advice

Avoid all protests. Do not attempt to cross any protester roadblocks encountered. Confirm all freight arrangements on April 30; consider alternate shipping arrangements for critical items. Leave the area immediately if violence occurs nearby. Heed instructions from authorities.
