Police believe that the attack was pre-meditated; one of the victims is believed to be a member of the Sun Yee On triad. A heightened security presence is to be expected in Tai Po over the coming hours and days.

Context

The Sun Yee On triad is a prominent organized crime syndicate primarily active in Hong Kong and China. According to authorities, some 835 triad-related crimes were reported in Hong Kong from January through June 2018, representing a nearly 2 percent decline from 2017 numbers over the same period.
