Colombia: Nationwide protests Nov. 15 and 28, strike Dec. 13 /update 1

Multiple labor unions, civil society organizations, and student groups have announced nationwide demonstrations on November 15 and 28 amid an ongoing budget dispute and proposed tax hikes in the coming year. The Federation of Educators of Colombia (FECODE) and the Central Union of Workers (CUT), among other groups, have announced their intention to march in the capital Bogotá and other cities. Organizers have announced that the November 15 demonstration in the capital will begin at the National Park at 10:00 (local time) and subsequently proceed to Plaza de Bolívar. A related nationwide 24-hour strike has also been scheduled for December 13. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Context

Student protesters clashed with police on November 8, wounding several police officers and demonstrators, amid sustained demonstrations as the government seeks to implement education budget cuts and tax increases on consumer products. University students and faculty launched a nationwide indefinite strike on October 12, after promises by the government to increase the education budget fell short of union demands.
