China: Hazardous levels of air pollution in Beijing through Nov. 16

Hazardous levels of pollution recorded in Beijing November 14; expected to last until November 16

Warning

Event

A “yellow” alert for smog, the lowest category on the three-tier scale, was issued for the capital Beijing and the surrounding Jingjinji Metropolitan Region on Tuesday, November 13. Pollution levels are forecast to remain high until November 16. Fine particulate matter of up to 376 micrograms per cubic meter have been recorded, in what has been the most significant spike in air pollution since May 2017. Local authorities are advising people in Beijing to wear masks and use air purifiers to minimize breathing discomfort.

This air pollution could be hazardous to certain groups - e.g. children, seniors, pregnant women, and people suffering from asthma and other respiratory issues. Air pollution can be harmful to heart health and may make it more likely that some people will have a heart attack or stroke.

Context

Beijing is known for its notoriously high levels of pollution despite measures taken by the government in recent years to address the issue.

Advice

Individuals present in Beijing are advised to monitor the air quality situation, limit outdoor activity, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities. Do not hesitate to seek medical attention if experiencing breathing difficulties.
